K-OS: Joyful Rebellion (Astralwerks)One look at his name and visions of thuggery begin to accumulate in your mind. But make no mistake, this gentleman is far from negative. Plus, if you remember him from his previous LP, “Exit”, you’ll know where this cat’s mind is at.“Joyful Rebellion” offers up some memorable pop songs like “Crucial”, “The Love Song” and “B-boy Stance”. I was definitely surprised to hear a good amount of catchy hooks on this album as well as some original vocal delivery. His voice reminds me of Q-tip meets Black Moon @ a Marley family BBQ in Jamaica.K-OS is as versatile as he is talented. This is a god thing. The album can get a little schizophrenic at times though. “Joyful Rebellion” shifts around from “Hallelujah” with its acoustic, moog-induced daydream to “Dirty Water”; a slick dancefloor beat combined with distorted guitars and acoustic strumming. The bottom line is, “Joyful Rebellion” is a well thought out album and I dig most of the songs. But it just has that “i-spent-way-too-much-time-in-the-studio-and-i-have-a-lot-of toys-to-play-with” type of feeling.
