Lords of Dogtown Review by Dirty Mike The actors were all believable (with the exception of Johnny Knoxville’s character), and how can you go wrong with the classic “sell out vs. don’t sell out” story? The best scene in the movie was clearly Tony Hawk dressed in a NASA outfit and busting his ass on a skateboard saying “Wow, this is harder than it looks!” I think what could have improved the movie is instead if Tony Alva being punched in the face, I would have rather him get kicked in the nuts while he was wearing that one-piece male camel toe outfit in that skate competition. Him and Dr Dre on the cover of the World Class Wrecking Crew album. This movie is cool, but if you really want to see that actual competition footage where the dudes are barefooting downhills , skating 2 boards and all that check out Downhill Motion available exclusively at Futureclassic.net Bitch! I wouldn’t bother watching this movie with a girl unless you met her snowboarding. Dirty Mike’s Rating: 4 out of 5 There were things to like, of course. I really dug the grainy film choice and the way it was shot was true to my expectations. The acting was better than decent: Rebecca De Mornay was incredible (even though her character wasn’t given nearly enough screen time). Heath Ledger, who I thought to be annoying and overacted at first, really sucked me in. The choices for the three main characters did a great job, too…John Robinson (from Gus Van Sant’s “Elephant”) as Stacy Peralta, Emile Hirsch (“The Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys”), and Victor Rasuk (“Raising Victor Vargas”) seemed like perfect choices. The soundtrack was pretty badass, too. What didn’t I like? Well, the story, for one. It didn’t seem like they gave enough time to develop a lot of the in-between times. I was marginally enjoying the first half of the movie, but when it jumped to the time in their lives where they didn’t really see each other I felt like a lot was lost in that transition. From then on I was just picking it apart. I’ll save you from the rest of my gripes, because there’s a lot of them. Overall I’d have to give it a 4 out of 10. Unfortunately I feel like this is going to be referred to as the “Thrashin’” of the new millenium. I guess even Stacy Peralta writing this movie couldn’t save it from that fate.
