The Jews have Rosh Hashanah. The gays have the Tony awards. And the underground hip hop heads have Scribble Jam. For those of you who have lived under a rock (or get there hip-hop fix from late night with Carson Daily) Scribble Jam has been the premier showcase for all that is ill in the hip-hop world for the past nine years. The bill for this years SJ manages to balance the old school values of hip hop with the new hot trends that have recently been adopted. The usual DJ, MC, and Graffiti battles will definitely aim to please anyone who has a taste for the arts and competition. This years performers show how hip-hop has not forgotten its roots while growing more accepting of new forms of the culture. Friday night’s headliner is a man by the name of Big Daddy Kane. For those of you who are not familiar with BDK this website might be more for you. If you simply need a refresher Big Daddy Kane is referred to as the Godfather of underground hip hop and his been a big dawg in the game since Nintendo came out with the power glove (yall remember that shit?) The Saturday night headliner is the one and only Brother Ali. The brother has single handedly changed the face of hip hop, literally. Brother Ali is an African-American albino Muslim who has more skill in his left nut than 50 cent has in his whole body. Ali has single handedly chewed up and spit out (ok maybe not spit out considering he is pushing 250 lbs) any MC with a hot head that has tried to cross his path A new edition to the SJ festival is a hardcore music show. Hardcore is essentially punk rock + steroids. DJs like Mr. Dibbs (who is scattered throughout the whole weekend) has become a pioneer in the DJ community by playin hardcore music over hip hop drum tracks. Other performers scheduled for this years Scribble Jam include Casual from Hieroglyphics, Murs, Sadat X, Louis Logic, Akrobatik, Hangar 18 and many many more. Scribble Jam kicks off Thursday @ Top Cats in Cincinnati, OH. For ticket info check out Scribble Magazine or just click here. MaimZ |
